Julian Draxler, the €45m rated attacking midfielder, is reported
to be close to joining Arsenal in either the January or summer transfer window.
According to many rumours, Draxler currently speaks with Arsène Wenger on a
regular basis and has even hinted at joining the club in the summer, according
to the Mirror.
Basically, Draxler needs Arsenal and Arsenal need him as well.
Let’s just see what Arsenal can offer Draxler, should he
choose to join the club. The chance to learn from the player who he is most
likely to succeed at the CAM position would allow Draxler to watch fellow
countryman Mesut Özil control a game with his vision and technical skill. This
would mean direct lessons from his fellow German at both the club and
international level. Özil was once in his position, being the young German star
everyone was seeking, and may be able to act as a mentor to the young German
for his long footballing career ahead of him. To add on to this, the
possibility of working with Arsène Wenger has to be cherished. Many young stars
with bright potentials have walked through the halls of Highbury & the
Emirates, and many go on to becoming world-class footballers. Young players are
Wenger’s preference when it comes to transfers, and Draxler must take this into
account.
Now onto the real reason why Arsenal needs Draxler to sign
for the club. Too many times have Arsenal come close to signing world class
players and let them slip away. Zlatan, Ronaldo, Yaya Toure are all world-class
players that were once within inches of becoming Arsenal players. Signing
Draxler would provide a large morale boost at the club and may secure the
signatures of other players down the road; just to give them a chance to play
with a footballer who may become one of the world’s greats. Arsenal finally
have their ‘world-class player’ in Mesut Özil, so what’s to stop the club from
signing the future wizard of Öz?
Another thing which has been talked about a lot in the
papers is the lack of depth in the squad. Now I know this normally refers to
the thin amount of forwards available for selection, but if Draxler were to
join then the depth in midfield would be concrete, and in my opinion create a
top 5 midfield group in Europe. Having many options in Özil, Cazorla, Rosicky
for the CAM position means that the midfield can be rotated more effectively,
allowing for more energy in the squad for vital fixtures.
Yes the possibility of Julian Draxler signing for the club
does excite me, almost the same amount of excitement that came from the Mesut
Özil transfer. The possibility of seeing the heart of the German team for years
to come in an Arsenal shirt does make this transfer rumour surreal. Watching
Özil’s successor at the National level and perhaps the club level would make it
even more satisfying. Hopefully the move goes through and isn’t hi-jacked by
another club, although with the Willian transfer situation, I will never get
too happy over the possibility of a player joining before I actually see it happen
and is confirmed by the club.
