What we can take away from the Chelsea Match

Yesterday’s Monday Night Football match ended in a goalless draw, far from the expectations of many spectators. Both sides played particularly well and in lieu of the circumstances, we can see that both squads played with their guns a blazing. The result of the match would ultimately decide who would be atop of the Premier League table going into Christmas and although the Gunners did not prevail with a victory, supporters should not be too disappointed and here’s why:

1. Arsenal is TIED atop of the table
Those who are saying Arsenal is in second place are technically correct, however in reality, they are only in second on goal differential. In reality, the current standings have nothing to do with goal differential; it only becomes relevant the last day of the season if two teams are tied with points. Both Arsenal and Liverpool are tied with 36 points, and it’s almost a guarantee that both teams will drop points in the future, so why get worried about the title now, when the season still has another half to be played. As long as the team remains strong, it is very likely that the club can prevail and win the majority of their games and finish atop of the table.

2. Chelsea and Liverpool are yet to play each other
This is perhaps one of the greatest blessings for the club in the title race. This match means that one of these teams is guaranteed to drop points during the match whether 2 or 3 depending on a draw or a win. In any circumstance, the result is good for our title push because one of the clubs will have fewer points than they intended. In all honesty, a tie would be good for us that way each club only take away one point from the match. If a tie is not possible, I would prefer a Chelsea victory, because if Liverpool wins then they will surge on into the New Year ahead of us.

3. Our “Deadly December” is almost over
As I have previously written about, December is perhaps the most challenging month for the Gunners as the schedule is designed to be very difficult. Well now the club only has West Ham and Newcastle to deal with and is almost into the light, with January being a very easy month in terms of fixtures. The club can get themselves ready for what will be “Fierce February” having an almost mirrored schedule to the one just played. Hopefully, Wenger uses the rest to his advantage and gets the players ready for the near end of the season.

Obviously I am not overjoyed with a tie in our own stadium, but it’s not like I’m kicking myself either. Both sides played extremely well, and each deserved to come away from the match with a point each. Yes perhaps the officiating was a bit questionable, but that cannot be changed and we just have to live with it. I’m just glad that we got a point against what I think will be the team who will challenge us for the title in the end.
