Deadly December

The month of December could perhaps the defining moment in Arsenal’s current pursuit of silverware for the first time in 8 years. Hull City, Everton, Napoli, Man City, Chelsea, West Ham and Newcastle each provide their own set of difficulties and challenges to be faced by the league leaders. For many seasons, the club’s form after Christmas has been impeccable, it is the slow starts to seasons that usually lead to downfall.

Currently sitting at the top of the table 31 points, Arsène Wenger’s side has a four point lead over London rivals Chelsea. The club must try to drop the least amount of points possible to assure this lead from diminishing. Let’s analyze the Gunners opponents this month, shall we? Hull City is coming off of a 3-1 victory against Liverpool, who have been immaculate this season. Everton has only been beaten once this season, by non-other than Man City, who will also square off against Arsenal during “Deadly December”. Finally there is good old Chelsea, who Arsenal have not been successful against for 2 years, leading to the question: Do the Gunners have what it takes to be Champions?

Of course they do! The form of players like Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere provide a confidence boost to  a squad playing similarly to that of the ‘Invincible’ Squad of 03/04. It will take much effort and desire to do so, but given Arsenal’s record under pressure, I am confident the team will succeed. Shall Arsenal qualify for the Champions League knockout stage, which I assume they will because they only need 1 point, the squad will be given a large boost which will help them deliver against tough opponents. Out of the 18 possible league points available this month, I think it is reasonable to say we will get 14, which would still mean a first place ranking in the Barclays Premier League. Shall this be accomplish, Gunner fans can relax knowing their team has a much more relaxed schedule come the New Year.

Perseverance, dedication and effort are essential to see Arsenal hold its’ place as league leaders. It will require much resilience and heart to prove to the world that Arsenal is still a top club and that nothing and no one will take away what they desire.
